Blue House

Spanish Read

My name is Bart. I am a man. I want a new house. I want a simple place. I want a happy place. Today is a special day. Today I am looking for my house.

I look at houses on the internet. I walk around the city. I see a blue house with a red door. The house isn’t very big. The house isn’t very small. The house is perfect for me. I smile. I say: this could be my new home.

An agent opens the door. I enter slowly. The living room is very bright. The kitchen is light and clean. There is a small bathroom and a room with a large window. I touch the wall. It smells like fresh paint.

I listen to the silence. I like silence. There is a flower in the garden. Just one flower, but it is brave. I laugh a little. I say: flower, would you like to be my neighbor?

I ask the price. The agent speaks slowly. I listen carefully. The price is right. I sign the papers. I pay carefully. The agent gives me a key. The key shines. I look at the key as if it were gold. I say to the key: hello, friend. The agent laughs. I laugh too. Now the house is mine.

I buy boxes. I put my things in the boxes. I put a cup, a lamp, and my plant in them. The plant is called Paco. Paco is green and serious. I take the boxes to the blue house. I open the door with my new key.

I walk in and say loudly, “Hello, house.” The house doesn’t speak, but I feel a sense of peace. I put the bed in the bedroom. I put the cup in the kitchen. I put the lamp in the living room. Everything is simple. Everything is fine.

I look for the light switch. I press a button. A bell rings. Ding-dong! It’s not the light. It’s the door. I get a little scared. I look out the window.

There’s no one here. I laugh at myself. I say: Bart, this button isn’t for the light. Then I press another button. Now it works. The room lights up. I throw a little party. The party is me, my cup, and Paco the plant.

The next day, a neighbor arrives with bread. Her name is Rosa. She says, “Welcome.” I say, “Thank you.” I make coffee. We drink coffee in the kitchen. Rosa looks at the red door and says, “It’s pretty.”

I say: yes, the door is happy. We both laugh. Rosa gives me some advice: take care of the flower in the garden. I say: yes, ma’am. The flower is my neighbor too.

I want to hang a picture. I use a hammer. I’m strong, but I’m not very fast. I hammer in a nail, but the nail pops out. The picture falls onto the sofa. It doesn’t break. I say, “Thank you, sofa.” The sofa doesn’t respond. Of course, it’s a sofa. I laugh again.

It’s nighttime. I’m sitting in the living room. I hear the refrigerator. The refrigerator goes mmm. I say to it: hello, refrigerator, you sing well. The moon shines through the window. The house is quiet.

Me too. I’m Bart. I’m a man with a new house. My house is simple. My house is mine. And in my house, every day, there is a smile.
